Um wachsen zu können, müssen sich die Larven häuten. Dieser Vorgang wird hier am Beispiel einer Larve von Dynastes hercules gezeigt. Kurz nach der Häutung ist der Kopf noch weich und weiss. Gut zu sehen ist der viel kleinere dunkel gefärbte Kopf der alten Larvenhaut.

In order to grow the larvae need to shed their skin. Here this process is shown with a larva of Dynastes hercules. Right after the molting the larva's head is soft and white. The dark head of the old molt is considerably smaller than the head after the molting.

Zehn Stunden später wird der Kopf langsam hart und verfärbt sich braun. Die alte Haut wird häufig aufgefressen.

Ten hours after the molting the head hardens and turns brown. Mostly the larva will eat the old skin.

Die Larvenhaut ist ausgehärtet und die Larve hat wieder zu fressen begonnen. Die dunklen Punkte an der Seite sind die Atemöffnungen (Stigmen).

The skin has completely hardened and the larva is ready to eat again. The dark spots on the side are the openings for respiration (stigma).
