Nach der Paarung legt das Weibchen Eier in das Substrat. Diese vergrössern ihr Volumen beträchtlich bis die Larven ausschlüpfen. Die Larven, deren einzige Beschäftigung aus Fressen besteht, häuten sich noch zweimal, danach bauen sie sich zur Verpuppung eine stabile Hülle, den Kokon. Darin häutet sich die Larve zur Puppe. In der Puppe wandelt sich das Tier zum eigentlichen Käfer um. Die Puppenhülle reisst auf und der Käfer schlüpft. Oft bleibt er noch wochenlang im Kokon, bis er sich befreit und aus der Erde kriecht.

After the mating the female will lay eggs into the substratum. These eggs increase their size visibly until the larvae hatch. The larvae do nothing but feed and molt twice until they build a cocoon. In this cast the larva turns into a pupa. Inside this strange looking form happens the miraculous transformation into the adult beetle. Finally the pupa cracks and the beetle emerges. Normally it will take a few weeks until the beetle leaves its cocoon and crawls out of the soil.
