Die Qualität des Substrates ist entscheidend für den Erfolg in der Käferzucht. Die einzelnen Komponenten sind deshalb mit grosser Sorgfalt auszuwählen.

The quality of the substrate is very important to be successful in breeding beetles. So you have to select the components very carefully.

Weissfaules Laubholz (v.a. Eiche und Buche). Es hat dann die richtige Konsistenz, wenn man es mit blossen Händen zerkleinern kann. Grössere Mengen zerkleinert man am besten mithilfe eines Spatens in einem stabilen Kessel. Frisches Holz ist völlig unbrauchbar.

Well rotten branches of deciduous trees (mainly quercus and fagus). It is in the right state if you can crush it to pieces with bare hands. Crushing the wood into small flakes works best if you use a flat edged shovel and a solid pail. Fresh wood is completely useless.

Altes Laub aus der letzten Saison, hauptsächlich Buche und Eiche. Auch diese Komponente muss gut zerkleinert werden. Am einfachsten geht das, wenn man das Laub trocknen lässt und anschliessend zwischen den Handflächen zerreibt. Das gibt ziemlich viel Staub: Draussen machen und eine Staubmaske tragen!

Old leaves from the last season, mostly fagus and quercus. This component also have to be reduced to small pieces. This works best if you let the leaves completely dry in advance. Then pulverize them in your hands. This produces a lot of dust so do this work outside and wear a protective face mask.

Das fertig gemischte Substrat aus zerkleinerten Holz- und Laubstücklein. Jetzt muss es nur noch befeuchtet werden. Wer will, kann zusätzlich wenig Laubwalderde oder schadstofffreien Kompost zugeben.

This is the perfect substrate made of small pieces of crushed leaves and well rotten woodflakes. You just have to moisten it. There is also the possibility to add a small amount of compost.
